Save the Fourways CentreSave the Fourways Centre During the summer of 2009, Anne-Marie campaigned to save the Fourways Adult Day Care Centre in Amble. The Lib Dem Administration at County Hall planned to close the centre as part of a plan to implement 'personalised budgets' for elderly and disabled people. Anne-Marie supports the principle of vulnerable people choosing the care that suits them best. But she resolutely opposed the unneccesary, savings-driven closure of this treasured and vital community asset. Anne-Marie visited the Centre when she first heard that it was threatened with closure. She listened to people who used the Centre and to staff who worked there. She met carers who received a valuable respite when they left their vulnerable family and friends in this safe environment. This experience confirmed her early feelings that the closure of the Fourways Centre would be an injustice to decent people who have paid taxes and played by the rules all their life, but who were now unable to care for themselves. Anne-Marie spoke out against the Lib Dem driven closures at public meetings in Amble. She submitted a detailed argument against the closures to the public consultation and helped to gather a petition of more than 600 local signatures in support of the Fourways Centre. Sadly, Northumberland Lib Dems succeeded in forcing the closure, although Conservative Councillors insisted on an ammendment that guarantees the continuation of day care in Amble, albeit by other providers.
