New RoadDual the A1Anne-Marie’s top priority is to get the A1 upgraded to a dual carriageway throughout the length of North Northumberland. In 2008, Anne-Marie founded the A1 Action Group, which has brought together local businesses, regional bodies, cross-party political support and thousands of individuals. The A1 Action Group is getting results by bringing voices together to lobby Westminster and Europe effectively for the first time. Shortly before the General Election, Anne-Marie persuaded the incoming Government to include the A1 on the list of roads considered for upgrading using national funds. Like many other local people, Anne-Marie is frustrated that this issue has rumbled on for years with no effective voice from our region. Alan Beith has failed to get the A1 dualled for almost 40 years. After decades of petitioning the Party of Government, without any success, the new coalition Government presents a unique opportunity for him to make the case for dualling as our local MP. Anne-Marie will continue to press to make sure that this happens. ![]() Anne-Marie lives in Netherwitton, near Longhorsley and close to the single carriageway A1, which she must use on a daily basis Firstly, the road is dangerous. Countless accidents have ended or scarred the lives of far too many people. Long standing accident black spots, such as those near Felton and Adderstone, simply must be tackled. Secondly, the road blocks ecomonic development. North Northumberland must become better connected to Edinburgh and Scotland, and to Newcastle and the rest of England, if our local economy is to thrive and provide our young people with opportunities to work.
Anne-Marie lobbies Transport MinisterTheresa Villiers and William Hague to get the A1 dualled Anne-Marie is continuing to drive her A1 campaign forward, pushing transport in the North East to the top of the Government’s to-do list. She was recently invited to the Scottish Parliament to promote the issue North of the border. ![]() Anne-Marie at the Scottish Parliament with John Lamont MSP (right) and Alan Ferguson, local businessman and Chairman of the A1 Action Group
