Anne-Marie Trevelyan, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Berwick-upon-Tweed and Director of the Dual the A1 Campaign, has made a plea to the local highways agency to ensure that the A1 road works, which have necessitated residents of Newton on the Moor and Swarland taking significant detours, are complete by the scheduled 22nd December.
Road closures to allow for resurfacing work were meant to commence on the 24th November but this was delayed by a week, the finish date has been moved from the 20th to the 22nd December. Anne-Marie Trevelyan said; “I sincerely hope that this deadline is met as I know from speaking to residents that this has caused them a lot of inconvenience and meant them having to take detours of up to around 12 miles. There is a local resident on the south-bound side who needs to contact the highways agency and have an escort to travel safely from the area and a local publican whose trade has suffered because of the disruption”.
Anne-Marie Trevelyan added; “residents are aware that this road work needs to be done and are understanding but I hope their patience is not stretched by any further delays and I have contacted the highways agency and asked them to ensure that the work is completed on time for them and before Christmas”.
