Anne-Marie Trevelyan, MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed, paid a visit to Rothbury First School on Friday, as part of her programme to visit all the schools in her constituency. Her visit coincided with Red Nose Day, giving her the opportunity to talk to the children about their fundraising efforts, and for everyone to don the trademark red noses.
The children were encouraged to wear something red in honour of the day, and wear their charity red noses with pride.
Mrs Trevelyan said: “Red Nose Day is such a fantastic cause, and a great way for children to get involved in charity fundraising. Everyone can get involved, be it by baking cakes or a sponsored activity. Every effort makes a real difference, and it was an honour to visit Rothbury First School this year to discuss with pupils what they had been up to.”
The MP took part in a Q&A session with the Year Four pupils, who are studying Parliament and democracy this term.
Anne-Marie said: “I often find it is children who will ask the most relevant or direct questions, and it is always a real pleasure to take part in Q&As and to talk to children about politics and how it impacts their lives too. I was especially pleased to see the pupils are learning about giving speeches and constructing arguments – I hope I gave them some useful pointers!”
Anne-Marie was given a tour of the school by Headteacher Mrs Nicki Mathewson, who discussed a range of educational and funding policy issues with the MP.
