Anne-Marie Trevelyan, MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed, was invited by the National Trust to visit Lindisfarne Castle, to see for herself how the work to restore the Northumberland icon is progressing.
The Castle is presently undergoing a £3million restoration, funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The MP was given a full tour of the site and the works, and was able to learn more about the delicate repairs taking place and the challenges the expert team has faced.
Anne-Marie said: “This is an amazing project and I was delighted to be able to see the progress being made to ensure our historic Northumberland landmarks are restored and preserved for future generations. Although the castle will be closed to the public for a year, when it opens its doors again, everyone will notice the transformation. I am very impressed with the scale and organisation of this restoration and the National Trust has my full support”.
The exposed location of the castle has meant it has been battered by the elements over the centuries, which has presented additional challenges to the National Trust team carrying out the work, as they battle to keep moisture out of the castle. The landmark is scheduled to open its doors once more in April 2018.
