On the election trail: Day 1 - A is for A1.
The official launch of our campaign on the steps of the Guildhall in Berwick today means that we are off on the campaign trail! It was lovely to chat to so many passers-by, from the Berwick CPO to holiday makers from Richmond, and a group of railwaymen stopping off to get some lunch - who told me they were Labour voters unless I got the A1 dualled in which case they'd vote for me!
So I was able to explain that this is my key priority for the patch, that I have already got £293m committed and being spent on the first half of the dualling, from Morpeth to Ellingham, with three further sets of road widening projects further north, and the finalised route goes to planning for approval this summer. Will they vote blue? Who knows, but the wonderful part of the election trail is that I get to chat to thousands of locals and hear what's bothering or interests them, one-to-one.
In Alnwick this afternoon, and at Alnmouth station this evening, concerns raised included ensuring that British university links with EU countries remains strong and that shared human resources will be continued. I reassured the professor in question that Jo Johnson the Universities Minister is totally aware and focused on this. The specifics of what Brexit means to all my constituents in their different jobs is a key part of this election campaign for me: if I am fortunate enough to be returned as the MP then I want a long list of all the areas which I need to go and press the Brexit ministers on.
... and no, it won't be B for Brexit tomorrow!
