Anne-Marie Trevelyan, MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed, has welcomed the latest report on the future the Alnwick Partnership of schools, which recommends the Council saves Branton and Embleton schools in her constituency.
The MP, who led campaigns to save the schools, submitted a detailed response to the Council consultation on their original plans, which had earmarked both schools for closure.
Mrs Trevelyan surveyed hundreds of local residents and urged the Council’s Family and Children's Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee to reconsider their proposals to close the schools.
The report on the Council’s consultation recommends converting the schools from first to primary schools in advance of the September 2016 academic year.
Mrs Trevelyan said: “I was inundated by responses to my survey on the future of Branton and Embleton schools. The overwhelming message from parents and other residents, was that the schools are crucial to the future of the villages. People want to be able to raise their children in our rural communities and have them benefit from the fantastic education already provided.
"I am pleased the Council has listened, and would urge the Cabinet to accept the Committee’s recommendations. I very much hope adequate support will be provided to all schools needing to undergo the change from first to primary.”
